Community Contribution: How does your region keep its volunteer heart strong?

The Soup Box is a community-led initiative making it easy for people to support local farmers while feeding our vulnerable neighbours with dignity. Born in Toowoomba after a break-in spoiled food intended for Base Services, the idea was simple: if our region is a food bowl, no one should miss out on fresh, nourishing meals. Locals buy their fresh produce and choose one or two extra items to place into Soup Boxes. That produce is collected by Base Services and turned into nutritious meals and training opportunities for people doing it tough. Over the past three years, the community has redirected around $25,000 worth of fresh produce through this simple five week annual initiative. The Soup Box strengthens volunteering by keeping contribution low-barrier, seasonal, and community-owned—many small actions, shared responsibility, creating a more connected local food community.
